In combating ICT facilitated trafficking in persons

25.05.2023

A thematic briefing “Strengthening multilateral cooperation against trafficking in persons that occurs or is amplified through the use of  technology” initiated by Belarus in partnership with the Philippines was held on 25 May in the Vienna International Centre on the margins of the 32nd Session of the UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice.

The participants were welcomed by the Permanent Representative of Belarus to the International Organisations in Vienna A.Dapkiunas and Margarita Lourdes F. Magsaysay, Executive Director of the National Coordination Centre to Combat Trafficking in Persons of the Philippines.

Presentations were made at the briefing by representatives of international organisations — active participants of the Interagency Group against Trafficking in Persons (ICAT): UN Office on Drugs and Crime, International Organisation for Migration, Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe and the international NGO Love Justice International.

Particular emphasis in the discussion was placed on the dual role of technology in relation to human trafficking. On the one hand, the criminal world is actively using technology for its own purposes; on the other hand, technology provides new opportunities for law enforcement agencies to suppress criminal activities.

Participants of the event exchanged ideas on ways to establish more effective interaction of all interested partners to counter human trafficking.

Presentations:
Leveraging policies and legislation to address technology-facilitated trafficking in human beings (Radu Cucos, OSCE)

Strengthening multilateral cooperation to address tech-facilitated TiP (Heather Komenda, IOM)

Strengthening multilateral cooperation against trafficking in persons that occurs or is amplified through the use of technology (Hannah Lizette S. Manalili, Interagency Council against Trafficking, the Philippines)
