Participation of the delegation of Belarus in the review meeting of the Convention on Nuclear Safety

20.03.2023

On March 21 – 31, 2023, the Joint Eighth and Ninth Review Meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Convention on Nuclear Safety is being held at the Vienna International Center in Austria.

The Convention on Nuclear Safety was concluded under the auspices of the IAEA in 1994. Its parties are 90 states and Euratom. Belarus has been a party to this international treaty since 1998 and takes part in all its review meetings. Such meetings are held every three years to review national reports on the implementation of international commitments made and facilitate the strengthening nuclear safety globally. There was no review meeting in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, so this year the joint meeting covers two review circles.

The Belarusian delegation at the meeting is led by the Head of the Department for Nuclear and Radiation Safety of the Ministry for Emergency Situations Ms Olga Lugovskaya. The delegation of Belarus also comprises the representatives of ministries of Energy, Healthcare, Foreign Affairs, National Academy of Sciences and the Belarusian NPP.

The delegation's workplan includes participation in plenary sessions and discussion the national reports within respective country groups. The presentation and consideration of the national report of Belarus will take place on March 21. The experience of Belarus, which commissioned the first unit of its nuclear power plant, traditionally attracts the attention of a wide range of participants.

The text of the national report of Belarus on the implementation of the Convention on Nuclear Safety (in Russian and English) is publicly available on the website of the Department for Nuclear and Radiation Safety of the Ministry for Emergency Situations.
