On the participation of the Belarusian delegation in the 68th session of the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs
14.03.2025On March 10-14, 2025 the 68th session of the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs was held in Vienna.
The delegation of Belarus was headed by the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Belarus to International Organizations in Vienna. The delegation includes representatives of the Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Belarus and the permanent representative.
Within the framework of the general debates at the session of the Commission, Head of the Main Department for Drug Control and Combating Human Trafficking of the Ministry of Interior of Belarus A. Silvestrovich made a statement. In his speech, A. Silvestrovich drew attention to the need for strict compliance with the provisions of the UN anti-drug conventions. He informed about Belarus' efforts to address the problem of a sharp increase in the transit of psychotropic substances from the EU and called on EU member States to effective non-politicized international cooperation to prevent and combat drug-related crimes. A. Silvestrovich stressed the Ministry's openness to joint investigations in the interests of the countries of the region and Belarus' willingness to continue sharing information and practical experience.
At a thematic event on the sidelines of the СND session “Improving the availability and accessibility of controlled substances for medical purposes and improving the effectiveness of pain relief”, organized by Russia in partnership with Belarus, South Africa and UNODC, the Belarusian delegation, as a co-speaker, drew attention to the problems with the supply of vital medicines and pharmaceutical substances of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances to Belarus from the EU starting in 2022. The Belarusian delegation called for the removal of international barriers that hinder effective international cooperation, in particular, unilateral coercive measures that restrict access to vital medicines, basic drugs and pharmaceutical components for scientific and medical purposes, including for the relief of pain and suffering.
The Belarusian delegation took part in a thematic event organized by the Shanghai Cooperation Organization with the support of UNODC and China, and provided information on Belarus' experience in tackling drug trafficking online.
