Permanent Representative of Belarus to the OSCE meets the OSCE Secretary General

13.04.2021

On April 9, 2021 the Permanent Representative of Belarus to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe Andrei Dapkiunas met in Vienna with the OSCE Secretary General Helga Schmid.

The OSCE is the largest regional international security organization. The headquarters of the Organization is located in Vienna (Austria). The OSCE is made up of 57 participating States. The origins of the Organization go back to the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (1973-1975) and the Helsinki Final Act adopted in 1975. In 1995 the Conference was renamed to the Organization.

The Belarusian diplomat and the head of the OSCE Secretariat exchanged views on the current state of affairs in the Organization and discussed possible ways to strengthen the role of the OSCE and increase the Organization’s influence on the processes taking place on the European continent.

The head of the Belarusian mission to the OSCE noted that the serious crisis of confidence in the Eurasian-Atlantic area nowadays does not allow the full use of the existing OSCE tools and instruments for the development of broader and more friendly international cooperation.

According to A. Dapkiunas, only the restoration of trust through concerted efforts of state leaders and diplomats – both in the OSCE and in the framework of bilateral state-to-state contacts – could effectively prevent the escalation of tension in the OSCE area and gradually restore effective mechanisms of cooperation in politico-military, economic and environmental, and human dimensions of security.
