Participation of the delegation of Belarus in the meeting of the Joint Convention

From June 27 to July 8, 2022, the Seventh Review Meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management is being held at the Vienna International Center in Austria.

The Joint Convention was concluded under the auspices of the IAEA in 1997. Its parties are 87 states and Euratom. Belarus has been a party to this international treaty since February 24, 2003 and takes part in all its review meetings. Such meetings are held every three years to review national reports on the implementation of international commitments made, as well as policies and practices for the management of spent fuel and radioactive waste.

The Belarusian delegation at the meeting is led by the Head of the Department for Nuclear and Radiation Safety of the Ministry for Emergency Situations Ms Olga Lugovskaya. The delegation of Belarus also comprises representatives of the Ministry of Energy, the National Academy of Sciences and the Belarusian NPP.

The delegation's workplan includes participation in plenary sessions and discussion the national reports within respective country groups. The presentation and consideration of the national report of Belarus will take place on Wednesday, June 29. The experience of Belarus, which commissioned the first unit of its nuclear power plant last year, traditionally attracts the attention of a wide range of participants. Discussion of the report will contribute to further improvement of the safety of spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste management.
