On the meeting of the Ambassador of Belarus A. Dapkiunas with the Executive Director of the World Institute for Nuclear Security Mr Lars van Dassen

On March 19, 2021, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Belarus to the Republic of Austria, Permanent Representative of Belarus to the International Organisations in Vienna Andrei Dapkiunas met with the Executive Director of the World Institute for Nuclear Security (WINS) Lars van Dassen.

The World Institute for Nuclear Security was established with the support of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in 2008 as a non-profit non-governmental organization aimed at promoting nuclear security at the national and global levels, primarily through the sharing and promotion of good practices amongst security professionals. The Institute acts as an international forum for the exchange of views and search for new ways to ensure the nuclear security of nuclear and other radioactive materials and facilities. An important area of institute’s activity is training and development of personnel with responsibilities for nuclear security, organisation of relevant scholarships and training programs. The Institute is an official observer at the IAEA General Conference and its nuclear security related committees.

Lars van Dassen, who has headed WINS since January 2021, shared his vision of priorities and directions of future work of the institute, told about its current programs, expressed interest in developing mutually beneficial cooperation with interested Belarusian partners.

Andrei Dapkiunas informed about the progress with construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant, the consistent and comprehensive measures taken to ensure the nuclear security of nuclear materials and facilities in the country, told about the current cooperation between Belarus and the IAEA in this area.

The Permanent Representative of Belarus and the Executive Director of World Institute for Nuclear Security agreed to explore the possibility to foster cooperation of interested Belarusian organisations with WINS and its network of partner institutions. They discussed possible priority steps to develop such cooperation.
