The UN in Vienna unanimously adopted a resolution initiated by Belarus on combating human trafficking for the purpose of labor exploitation

27.05.2023

On the night of May 27, 2023 in Vienna, the 32nd session of the UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice by consensus approved the resolution initiated by the delegation of Belarus “Taking Action against Trafficking in Persons in Business Operations, Public Procurement and Supply Chains for Goods and Services”.

For almost two decades, Belarus has been actively promoting the strengthening of international cooperation to combat human trafficking, which is one of the serious global threats of our time.

The issue proposed by Belarus in the resolution is innovative: it has never before been considered in the main specialized Сommission of the UN on crime.

Globalization often has its negative sides, creating a demand for cheap labor in many sectors of the economy, which is realized, among other things, through human trafficking for the purpose of labor exploitation.

The resolution is aimed at uniting the efforts of states, business, civil society and international organizations to effectively combat human trafficking in the economic sphere.

The resolution clearly articulates the risks of human trafficking in the context of economic activity, public procurement and supply chains and sets out a set of action-oriented recommendations for the public and private sectors.

The document notes the importance of intensifying cooperation between states and the business community to identify and address the risks of human trafficking at all levels of economic transactions and supply chains of goods and services.

The resolution specifically provides for measures to promote and protect victims of human trafficking.

The adoption of the resolution will further draw the attention of the international community to the problem of modern slavery and will give an important impetus to the joint efforts of all interested partners to combat this social evil.
