On participation of the Belarusian delegation in the 64th session of the IAEA General Conference

On September 21, 2020, the 64th session of the IAEA General Conference opened at the headquarters of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna. This year Belarusian delegation at the main annual event of the agency is headed by the Minister of Energy of the Republic of Belarus Victor Karankevich.

The key issues of the organization's activities will be discussed during the General Conference, including the development of nuclear energy, nuclear safety, technical cooperation, nuclear security, safeguards implementation, non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and others. The event will last until 25 September.

On the first day of the General Conference plenary session the head of Belarusian delegation delivered national statement. V.Karankevich highly appreciated the role of the IAEA in promoting the peaceful use of nuclear technologies, assistance to the countries that have made their choice in favor of nuclear power energy, and also thanked the agency for the assistance in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic. The conference participants were informed about physical start-up of the first unit of the Belarusian NPP and overriding attention to nuclear and radiation safety of the plant.

The Minister of Energy of Belarus also met with IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi. The interlocutors stressed the high level of interaction between Belarus and the agency in the context of the implementation of the Belarusian nuclear power program. V.Karankevich informed about the construction progress of the Belarusian NPP, measures taken to ensure the highest nuclear safety standards. From his side, the head of the agency assured of the IAEA readiness to continue providing Belarus with the necessary technical and expert support.

During the visit of the Minister of Energy to the IAEA, the official ceremony of handover of the IAEA Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review mission report (INIR Phase 3) was held. The Minister of Energy thanked the IAEA for the expert support, expressed confidence that the recommendations and proposals made would further enhance safety during the commissioning of the Belarusian NPP and its operation.
